Kia ora, I’m Anton, a registered counsellor in Ōtautahi, Aotearoa.

I’m interested in talking with people, couples and families with diverse sexualities, the neuro-diverse, and those who are managing their relationships with substances. I’m open minded, with a wide range of life experience. I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Counselling from the University of Canterbury, and I am working to complete my Masters in Counselling from the University of Waikato in late 2026.

What is counselling?

The way I work as a counsellor is called narrative therapy. When you come to counselling to talk about something difficult or something bothering you, we will first introduce ourselves so that we can make a connection to each other.

We will talk – as much as you want to – about what is happening for you. We will talk about your hopes, and we will also talk about what will support and grow your hopes. We will work out how often we will meet; for how long; what is useful to talk about; who else supports you.

Supervision

In order to provide the best possible service, I regularly meet with a supervisor to discuss my counselling work. In supervision, the spotlight is on my practice, and what I am doing.

Sometimes, I use recordings of my counselling as part of the supervision reflection process. I may use your first name when talking about our work together but I take care to not identify you.

Confidentiality, privacy and informed consent

Confidentiality and privacy can be complicated so please ask me questions whenever you want to. The starting point is that I regard everything you tell me in counselling as confidential. You decide who gets to know any details about our conversations. If there are serious and immediate safety concerns for you or for others, we will bring others in to our conversation. If this is not possible it may be necessary for me to call on someone to assist with this. Another time I may need to talk about our work together would be if a court required this.

Notes

I write notes, mainly to remember what you tell me, and for us to refer to in our counselling conversations. I will check with you, from time to time, that you are ok about what I am writing down. You are always welcome to look at my notes. I will consult you about any letters I write to other people. And I may also consult you about letters I write to you! I take care to store notes securely and follow legal requirements for destroying them.

Te Tiriti

I ensure to integrate the Treaty of Waitangi principles of Partnership (Rangatiratanga) Participation (Kāwanatanga) and Protection (Kaitakawaenga). This makes sure that my practice is delivering culturally safe and responsive care for Māori.

Ethics

If you have any comments or concerns about counselling, or my way of working with you, I want us to work out a way for you to let me know. You might not want to do this directly, but if you do it will help me in my practice to look for other ways to practice as a counsellor. Recordings

To help me notice more about what I am doing as a counsellor, I normally video or audio record counselling sessions. I will always ask for your written permission to do this, and you are quite free not to agree or to change your mind before I have used them for my study. Saying no or changing your mind will not affect our counselling work together. I take care to store all my recordings securely and will erase them once they have fulfilled their purpose. I will write about and talk about my work from time to time with my teachers and peers to ensure my work is of a good standard, and where possible I will keep your private details to myself by using a pseudonym. I won’t use cloud-based AI to transcribe any of our conversations , or use any system that could repurpose our notes.

Student Counsellor

I have been studying counselling for five years, as well as years of volunteering and practicum experience. 2026 is my last year of study for my Masters in Counselling at Waikato, and I have a Post Graduate Certificate in Counselling from Canterbury University.

I am currently on placement at the Canterbury Men's Centre, St Thomas of Canterbury School, and Ao Tawhiti Discovery School. I am working towards associate membership of the NZ Association of Counsellors. This means I am not covered by the NZ Association of Counsellors complaints process. I entirely understand if this a concern, and I am happy to discuss what this means further.
